When you get a new puppy, there are many new things to consider—including collars and leashes. Which collar is best for a tiny puppy? When is a Mini collar the right choice, and when should you choose a puppy collar instead?
At Drew’s Dogwear, we offer a variety of collars and leashes for puppies because puppies vary in size and have different needs. Here, we’ll guide you through the differences so you can more easily find the right solution for your puppy.
MINI COLLAR
Our Mini collar is our lightest and narrowest collar. It is only 1 cm wide and is particularly suitable for very small puppies that need to get used to the feeling of wearing a collar.
The Mini collar is therefore primarily intended as a lightweight collar for initial adjustment. When a small puppy has just moved home, it can be an advantage to start with something that feels as light and discreet as possible around the neck.
It is not necessarily the collar we would choose as the primary collar for longer walks.
PUPPY COLLAR
Our puppy collar is 1.5 cm wide and has still been designed with smaller dogs and puppies in mind. It is lightweight, but slightly wider than the Mini collar and therefore better suited for the first walks and everyday use.
While the Mini collar is especially about getting used to wearing a collar, the puppy collar is made for the puppy that is ready to get out and start learning how to walk.
The collar is adjustable, so it can be adjusted to fit your puppy as it grows.
Which collar should I choose for my puppy?
The right choice depends primarily on your puppy's size and how the collar will be used.
If you have a very small puppy that first needs to get used to wearing a collar, the Mini collar can be a good place to start.
If your puppy is ready for its first walks and everyday use, the puppy collar will typically be the more obvious choice.
It is also important not to look only at the puppy's age. Some breeds and puppies are already relatively large when they leave home. If neither the Mini nor the puppy collar fits your puppy's measurements, one of our regular dog collars can easily be the right choice.
The most important thing, therefore, is always the fit. Measure your puppy around the neck, and use the size guide on the individual product before choosing a size.
The first walks with your puppy
The first walks are full of new impressions. Sounds, people, other dogs, smells, and surroundings all have to be processed at once, while the puppy also has to learn to get used to wearing both a collar and a leash.
Therefore, it is a good idea to let the puppy gradually get used to the new equipment and give it time to learn what a walk really is. Small puppies often need more breaks and can quickly get tired, especially when they also have to deal with a lot of new impressions.
If you would like to take your puppy on longer walks, to a café, or on other outings, a dog bag can be a practical solution. This way, the puppy can join you outside and experience the world while having a safe place to rest when its little legs need a break.

MINI DOG LEASH
Our Mini dog leash is 1.5 meters long and 1 cm wide and made of cotton. It is designed as a very light and simple starter leash for small puppies.
The low weight means that the leash does not feel unnecessarily heavy when the puppy is learning what it means to walk on a leash. It is therefore an obvious choice for the first short walks and for the puppy that is still getting used to it all.
PUPPY ROPE LEASH
Our puppy rope leash is a lighter version of our standard rope leash. It is designed for puppies and small dogs, for whom a standard rope leash can be too heavy.
The puppy rope leash is also adjustable, which gives you a few more options for adjusting the length during walks.
It is therefore ideal for those who want a lightweight leash for their puppy, but would also like the functionality of our classic rope leashes.
Mini or puppy - you don't need to choose the same series
Even though the products are called Mini and puppy, the collar and dog leash do not necessarily need to come from the same series.
For example, a very small puppy can use the Mini collar for getting used to it at home, but later use a puppy collar together with a Mini dog leash on walks.
Similarly, a larger puppy may need one of our regular collars, but still benefit from a light puppy leash.
Therefore, always start with your dog rather than the product name. The best choice is the combination that suits your puppy's size, development, and the way you will use the equipment.
Find the right equipment for your puppy
There is no one-size-fits-all solution for puppies. Some start with a Mini collar, others fit straight into a puppy collar, and larger puppies may need a regular collar from the start.
The most important thing is that the equipment fits well, feels light and comfortable, and matches the stage your puppy is at.
